Over the course of eight weeks, we'll be exploring the building blocks necessary to create stories that ring true. We will read and discuss one another's work as well as stories by well-known authors whose work exemplifies the skills we're practicing. Each week we'll focus on a new element of storytelling and then put it to use in fun and challenging in-class writing exercises. Whether you're new to fiction or an old hand at the Iowa Method, this class is a place for you to push beyond your comfort zone and get constructive feedback on your writing.

Week One: Scene
"Pilgrims" by Julie Orringer

Week Two: Character
"A Small, Good Thing" by Raymond Carver

Week Three: Conflict
"Pie Dance" by Molly Giles and "Say Yes" by Tobias Wolff

Week Four: Voice
"Leda and the Swan" by Eric Puchner

Week Five: Dialogue
"A Perfect Day for Bananafish" by J.D.
